Dying to Self

As I was growing up, I carried a copy of this "poem" in my Bible. I still remember reading it for the first time, feeling convicted as I read it, and then cutting it out of a church newsletter to keep. Well, turn the clock forward just a few years...

The Spirit brought the reminder of this back to me last week while I was in Orlando, and––my childhood copy of the saying, worn as it had been, long gone now––I searched the internet to see if I could find it anywhere. And there it was…just as convicting and challenging as ever. I've got it stuck inside my Bible once again and am asking the Lord to continue to write it on my heart...

When you are forgotten, or neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you don't sting and hurt with the insult or the oversight, but your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ…

That is dying to self.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart, or even defend yourself, but take in all in patient, loving silence…
That is dying to self.
When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, any impunctuality, or any annoyance; when you stand face-to- face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility-and endure it as Jesus endured…
That is dying to self.
When you are content with any food, any offering, any climate, any society, any raiment, any “interruption” by the will of God…
That is dying to self.
When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation, or to record your own good works, or itch after commendations, when you can truly love to be unknown…
That is dying to self.
When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy, nor question God, while your own needs are far greater and in desperate circumstances…
That is dying to self.
When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart…
That is dying to self.

Want a To Whisper Her Name bookmark? Or two?

After working so hard on a book, it's really fun to see us getting closer to having the story on the printed page. And to you! I hope you love Belle Meade––and Ridley & Olivia––as much as I do. If you'd like a To Whisper Her Name bookmark, here's what to do:

Send a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) to the address below, and I'll send you a signed bookplate to place in your copy of To Whisper Her Name when it arrives. I'll include a couple of bookmarks too. One for you and one for a friend! Just send your SASE to:

Tamera Alexander
TWHN Bookplates
P.O. Box 871
Brentwood, TN 37024

I'll also include a recipe card for a scrumptious Southern dessert that's included in this story. Maybe you can make it for you and your book club if you choose to read TWHN together. And don't forget, I'd love to Skype or FaceTime with your book club when you meet this fall. Contact me, and we'll get the date set up!

More details on Virtual Book Club Visits here!

To Whisper Her Name is available in ebook for a PRE-order price of $4.99 (Kindle, Nook and iBook), but that only lasts until the release date. The PRE-order price for print is $8.38.

Snarky friends… Does it get any better?

Last week I was in Orlando at the International Christian Retailers Show, and I had the pleasure of meeting with interviewers and book buyers and chatting about books. But no meeting was more fun than that with Ms. Linda Rivers Attaway of Christian Fiction Online Magazine. A woman more commonly known as Mocha with Linda.

Linda and I had a blast chatting and whispering and trying not to make too much noise (not an easy task, I tell you) in the media room where others were also gathered. And Linda's sweet (and not-just-a-little-bit snarky) gift didn't help either. It was all so nice…except for the Duck Tape! Which has a story behind it.

Long story short, this past fall I hosted the first Book Banter on Bethany House's FB Page, and FB eventually "banned" me that day for over commenting. Can you imagine? Banning me from talking?! Well, a while later that day I came back to find that the lovely Miss Attaway had posted the picture...

The 2012 Christy Awards Program

Several of you have asked "What on earth is the Christy Award and where did it come from?" So, this is for you!

Here's the history behind the award as taken from the Christy Award website:

Catherine Marshall, writer of more than two dozen books and the subject of at least one biography, is one of America's most notable and bestselling Christian writers.
Her readers around the world know Catherine as "America's most inspirational author," as described in The New York Times. More than 25 million copies of her books are in print. Nine years in the making and perhaps Catherines's best-known work, the novel Christy has more than 10 million copies in print and is estimated to have been read by more than 30 million people.
The Christy Awards is proud to honor both the novelist and her novel through this annual award recognizing Christian novels of excellence.

And here's the program from this years award dinner with the finalists in each category. The way the winner is announced is fun, too… The emcee announces the category, then the first few lines of the novel are read aloud, giving the authors in that category a heads up as to who the winner is. Then the name of the book and author is announced. It's a great night!

Glimpses from ICRS in Orlando

Hey friends,

Here are some quick glimpses of ICRS so far. It's been a great week and a fun time with family and friends. We attended the Christy dinner tonight which was a wonderful event. Congrats to all the winners in all the different categories, and thanks to all of you who rooted for A Lasting Impression. I'm thrilled to have been a finalist this year!

And now, some quick snapshots...

Dessert! Delicious!!

And finally, back at the hotel where a nice stranger agreed to snap a family pic in the hallway before we got all comfy again. What a fun night, and I was so happy to "show off" my family. I couldn't do what I do without them, and wouldn't want to.

It's late now and I'm flat exhausted from a full day of interviews and booksignings and running. But it's "exhausted" in a good way. Now for a very quick night of rest then up to venture to Harry Potter World tomorrow.  Have any of you been? Any words to (or from) the wise?

Blessings on your Tuesday, friends! And more pics here!

Happenstance? Nah...

You know how some things happen and you think, "Oh my word…that's just what I needed!" Well, that happened for me recently. Yet I wouldn't call it happenstance…

Esta, my dad's sweet wife of almost a year now (and we're growing to love her more each day) and I were talking when I noticed a book on her shelf. I asked her about it and she said, "Oh, my sister gave that to me years ago. You're welcome to borrow it."

I picked it up and started reading… The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. And it's just what I needed right now as I'm writing the second book in the Belmont series.

It's a facsimile reproduction of a naturalist's diary for the year 1906. It's Edith Holden's words, in her own writing, with her own drawings. Beautiful. Such a treasure!

Esta encouraged me to borrow her copy from her sister, but....

Happy Independence Day!

Have you been to the Smithsonian in Washington and seen the original Old Glory that's preserved there? It's a moving experience, for sure. I love History.com and, in honor of today, here's a great video about Old Glory and the history behind our nation's flag…

Happy 4th of July, friends!
